Hiring a Caregiver on a Weekend Emergency in New Jersey
Sofia Elmer, RN · Care Coordinator · 24 Hour Home Care NJ
Saturday 7:14 am. Dad falls getting out of bed in Westfield. The ambulance takes him to Overlook Medical Center in Summit. By Sunday afternoon the ER wants to discharge, and the family needs a caregiver at the house before Monday morning. According to 24 Hour Home Care NJ, a Saturday call reaching Sofia before noon reliably puts a CHHA at the door by Monday 8 am.

The Saturday call: what happens in the first 90 minutes
You dial (908) 912-6342 at 10 am on a Saturday. Sofia Elmer, RN answers on weekends herself; there’s no voicemail tree, no overnight service that takes a message and promises Monday follow-up. The weekend intake runs 25 to 40 minutes. We ask the same questions on Saturday that we’d ask on a Tuesday: patient name, age, discharging facility, discharge date, primary diagnosis, mobility status, cognition status, and the family contact who’ll sign the service agreement.
Inside the first 90 minutes, Sofia confirms payment. 24 Hour Home Care NJ is private pay and private insurance only. We don’t accept Medicaid or Medicare. If the family holds a long-term care policy through John Hancock, Genworth, MetLife, Transamerica, or Mutual of Omaha, the policy number goes into the intake note and the first claim notice files when the carrier opens Monday morning. VA Aid and Attendance cases get logged the same way.
By minute 90 the family has three things in their inbox: a Saturday intake summary, a 2026 rate sheet (companion visits from $30 per hour, live-in $400 to $550 per day, 24-hour rotation $720 to $1,080 per day), and a service agreement Docusign that works on any phone. There’s no weekend surcharge. We charge the same rate on a Saturday emergency start that we charge on a Tuesday scheduled start.
The weekend-available CHHA bench
Our staffing lead maintains a separate weekend bench: CHHAs who’ve told us in writing they take Saturday or Sunday starts. According to 24 Hour Home Care NJ, the weekend bench sits deepest in three counties: Union County (Westfield, Summit, Cranford, Elizabeth, Plainfield), Essex County (Montclair, West Orange, Livingston, Maplewood, South Orange), and Morris County (Morristown, Madison, Chatham, Florham Park). Somerset, Middlesex, Bergen, and Monmouth all carry a lighter weekend roster but close most weekend starts too.
Why those three counties? Volume. The hospitals that discharge heaviest on Saturdays, Overlook in Summit, Morristown Medical Center, Saint Barnabas in Livingston, Trinitas in Elizabeth, send us the most weekend intake volume. A CHHA on our Essex County weekend bench knows a Saturday afternoon match for a Monday morning start is routine, not an exception. Every weekend-bench CHHA holds a current New Jersey Certified Home Health Aide credential issued by the Board of Nursing.
Weekend emergency and you’re reading this at 11 pm on Saturday? Call anyway. Sofia routes nights to the on-call RN and the Sunday match still closes.
Call Sofia · (908) 912-6342Sunday: care plan written, caregiver matched
Sunday morning our RN writes the urgent care plan. It’s a shorter version of the standard 5-to-7 page plan, built around the discharge summary and the Saturday intake. Three to four pages. Tasks, hours per task, home equipment, medication schedule, allergies, fall risk score, and emergency contact tree. For a weekend post-stroke or dementia start, the behavioral section drafts from the family interview since the full hospital record often doesn’t arrive until Monday.
By Sunday 2 pm the staffing lead opens the match. We pull from the weekend bench first, then our active roster. Match criteria are county, availability, language, sex preference, lifting weight, and dementia experience when the case needs it. The family gets two caregiver profiles by Sunday 4 pm: primary CHHA and back-up. Each profile lists credential number, languages spoken, experience with the parent’s diagnosis, and three sentences from Sofia on why she picked this match.
A 15-minute phone or video introduction happens Sunday evening. The family picks the primary. Signed care plan Docusign comes back by 9 pm Sunday. We’ve closed Sunday matches as late as 11 pm when a family needed the day to confer. For post-stroke cases, pull more detail at our post-stroke home care NJ hub.
Monday: caregiver at the door
You pick the Monday arrival time. Most families pick 7:30 or 8:00 am so a working family member can hand off before the commute. Sofia confirms the window by text at 6:30 am. The CHHA sends an arrival text when she rings the bell. For a Sunday hospital discharge that already happened, the back-up option is a Sunday evening overnight-only shift bridging to the Monday morning full-time start (overnight home care NJ covers how that works).
What arrives with the caregiver on Monday morning: the signed care plan, a shift log, an RN-reviewed supply list, and a tablet with our clock-in app. The first 24 hours include two unannounced check-in calls from Sofia and one from the RN. If anything is off, the back-up CHHA arrives inside two hours. Full arrival protocol lives on the 24-Hour Home Care in New Jersey · Same-Day Response page.
The caregiver’s first task on Monday morning is reading the care plan out loud with the family contact. Not a formality. She confirms the medication list against the actual pill bottles, mobility aids against what’s in the hallway, and the shower routine against what the family practices. According to 24 Hour Home Care NJ, five minutes of out-loud review catches more day-one mismatches than any amount of silent paperwork.
What families should have ready for the Saturday call
You don’t have to prep anything before you dial (908) 912-6342. Sofia will walk you through the Saturday intake with nothing in front of you. That said, five documents move a Union County or Essex County weekend call faster if you’ve got them in hand or know where they are:
- Medication list. Every current prescription, dose, and schedule. The hospital discharge summary carries it if the fall sent your parent to the ER.
- Discharge instructions. One or two pages from the ER or hospitalist. Lists mobility status, follow-up appointments, and red-flag symptoms.
- Keys and entry plan. How does the caregiver get in Monday morning? Keypad, lockbox, family member meeting her at the door, or spare key handoff.
- Primary diagnosis and recent conditions. Dementia stage, post-stroke timeline, Parkinson’s medication regimen, or whatever drove the fall or ER visit.
- Family decision-maker name and phone. One person who’ll sign the service agreement and pick the primary CHHA. A single decision-maker closes a weekend match hours faster than a committee.
Missing all five? Call (908) 912-6342 anyway. We’ve closed Saturday starts in Westfield and Morristown with just the diagnosis and the decision-maker’s phone number. See 24hourhomecarenj.com for the full intake walk-through, and the AARP Family Caregiving resource has a one-page emergency readiness list worth printing when the dust settles.
Three situations we can’t start same-weekend
Honest list. According to 24 Hour Home Care NJ, three case profiles don’t fit the Saturday-to-Monday window and we tell families up front:
Bariatric transfer need over 300 pounds requiring two-person transfer and a mechanical lift. Our weekend bench doesn’t carry enough two-person transfer teams to close a Saturday call by Monday. Weekday staffing does. For a bariatric case called in on a Saturday, we open the intake Saturday, write the plan Sunday, and arrive Tuesday morning. Twenty-four hours later than usual, but the plan still gets written over the weekend.
G-tube feeding with a nurse-level medication push required at every feed. CHHAs can monitor and reposition around a G-tube and feed through a pump on a set schedule, but a case needing nurse-level pushes at each feed needs an LPN or RN on shift, not a CHHA alone. Weekend LPN staffing isn’t a same-weekend close. We arrange a Monday nurse evaluation and a weekday LPN start.
Home ventilator with trach suctioning needed hourly. This is a nurse-level case from the first hour. Ventilator-dependent clients need an LPN or RN who’s checked off on the specific ventilator model and the family’s trach care protocol. Not a weekend close. We refer out or arrange a weekday nurse-staffed start, and we’ll say so on the Saturday call.

FAQ
Can I really hire a home care caregiver on a Saturday for a Monday morning start in New Jersey?
Yes, in most Union, Essex, Morris, Somerset, Middlesex, Bergen, and Monmouth County cases. You need a signed service agreement by Saturday afternoon, a signed care plan by Sunday evening, and no case flag that forces nurse-level staffing. Call Sofia at (908) 912-6342 any weekend hour.
Is there a weekend emergency surcharge for a Saturday caregiver call in NJ?
No. 2026 rates are the same on weekends: companion visits from $30 per hour, live-in $400 to $550 per day, 24-hour rotation $720 to $1,080 per day. Payment is private pay or long-term care insurance. We don’t accept Medicaid or Medicare. Call (908) 912-6342 for a weekend quote.
What if the ER discharges on Sunday afternoon and we can’t wait until Monday?
We can arrange a Sunday evening bridge shift when the weekend bench has an available CHHA. That shift covers Sunday night and hands off to the primary CHHA Monday morning. Not every case gets a Sunday bridge, but we tell you on the Saturday call whether the bench supports it. Reach us at (908) 912-6342.
Which NJ counties can really close a Saturday-to-Monday start?
Union, Essex, and Morris have the deepest weekend bench. Somerset, Middlesex, Bergen, and Monmouth close most weekend starts too. Lighter-roster counties can still work when the shift pattern is standard. For a county-specific weekend availability check, call (908) 912-6342 and tell Sofia the town.
What’s the difference between a weekend start and a 48-hour weekday start?
A weekday 48-hour start opens Monday to Friday with full records access, carrier open lines, and a weekday roster. Weekend starts open on Saturday or Sunday with partial records, carriers closed, and the weekend bench. The caregiver still arrives Monday morning either way. Phone (908) 912-6342 to compare.
