Home Care for NJ Veterans — Up to $2,795/mo VA Aid & Attendance Benefit

If you (or the parent you care for) served in a wartime era, the VA Aid & Attendance benefit can pay up to $2,795/mo toward home care. Most families don’t know it exists. Sofia Elmer, RN walks you through eligibility, helps you file, and coordinates the caregiver — all in one call.

★★★★★ 4.9 · 127+ family reviews · Sofia Elmer, RN handles the VA paperwork with you

The VA Aid & Attendance benefit is the best-kept secret in senior home care. Wartime-era veterans and surviving spouses who need help with daily activities can receive up to $2,795 per month tax-free — money that goes directly to paying for a caregiver at home. Most families never file because they don’t know the benefit exists, or they hire a for-profit “benefit assistance” agency that takes a cut. Neither is necessary. Sofia Elmer, RN walks you through eligibility, helps complete the forms, and coordinates the caregiver — all at no cost, per VA rules.

2026 VA A&A monthly benefit maximums

$2,795

Married veteran

$2,358

Single veteran

$1,515

Surviving spouse

These are 2026 maximums. Actual monthly benefit is calculated by subtracting your income from a set threshold, then reducing that gap by unreimbursed medical expenses (which includes home care costs). Sofia walks you through the arithmetic during the free call.

Who qualifies (3 tests)

  • Service test: 90+ days of active duty (not just training), with at least 1 day during a designated wartime era: WWII (Dec 1941 – Dec 1946), Korean War (Jun 1950 – Jan 1955), Vietnam era (Feb 1961 – May 1975 · or Feb 1961 for those in-country), Gulf War era (Aug 1990 – present). Honorable or general discharge.
  • Care test: Age 65+ OR permanently disabled OR need assistance with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, transferring, eating, toileting, medication management).
  • Financial test: Net worth cap $155,356 (2026) — excluding primary home + vehicle. Countable income minus unreimbursed medical expenses must be below the benefit rate for your category.

Surviving spouses qualify if they were married to a wartime-era veteran at the time of the veteran’s death and have not remarried. Same care + financial tests apply.

Common questions

How long does the VA take to approve A&A?

6-12 months is typical from filing to first payment. However, the VA back-pays to the date of application, so filing today locks in your effective date. Sofia can start home care immediately on private-pay, then reimburse retroactively when the benefit arrives. We work with families on payment plans that bridge this gap.

What if my parent is already in assisted living?

A&A pays for care in ANY setting including home, assisted living, and adult day care. If your parent moves home OR stays in AL, the benefit applies. We help you compare the two options during the consultation.

Do we need a VA-accredited attorney or agent to file?

Not always. For straightforward A&A claims we help you file directly with the VA — no attorney required. For complex situations (denied claims, appeals, asset planning around the net-worth cap) Sofia refers to VA-accredited elder-law attorneys we’ve worked with for years.

Can A&A be combined with LTCi and private pay?

Yes — this is the most common structure. A&A ($2,795) + LTCi ($3,000) + small private-pay contribution ($1,500) often covers 24-hour live-in care with families paying $0 out-of-pocket beyond LTCi premiums. Sofia sequences the funding sources during the free planning call.

Do you charge for the VA application help?

No. Per VA regulation, no one may charge for helping a veteran apply for benefits. Sofia’s time on this is free. We only bill when caregiver hours begin — and even then, the A&A benefit typically covers most or all of it.

Sofia walked into the hospital room before discharge and the whole tone changed. Mom got home with the same caregiver for the next four weeks. We've never felt that calm during a rehab.

Three years of live-in care for Dad's Alzheimer's. Same two women rotating. He still says 'good morning' to them by name. That continuity is everything.

We had three other agencies before. With 24 Hour Home Care NJ the caregiver actually shows up, and Sofia answers the phone. Both of those used to be miracles.
