What a shift with 24HCNJ actually looks like

You arrive at a client’s home in Westfield, Union County. The client is Betty, 82, recovering from a stroke. You’ve been on the case for 3 weeks. Sofia RN’s written care plan is on the fridge — meds, mobility tolerance, dietary restrictions, family emergency contacts.

You help Betty with her morning routine. She likes her tea before her meds. She talks about her grandson’s baseball game while you help her dress. You note her pain level in the shift log (Sofia reviews these weekly). Around noon you make her a sandwich — she asks for the sourdough this time. In the afternoon you take a slow walk to the mailbox and back — physical therapist’s recommendation. You clock out at 4 PM when the family caregiver arrives, briefing her on how the day went.

Tomorrow you’ll be back. Same client. Same routine. That’s the job.

Common questions from applicants

What if I don’t have a CHHA certification yet?

Apply anyway. We work with new caregivers who are motivated to certify — we help you find NJ-approved training programs and can sometimes reimburse a portion of tuition after you complete a probationary period with us.

Do you provide training for dementia care?

Yes. On-the-clock training in dementia stages, sundowning management, safe transfers, medication awareness, and family communication. Our dementia-specialist aides earn a rate differential.

What are the typical shift lengths?

Hourly shifts are 4-12 hours. Overnight is 8-12 hours (10 PM – 6 AM). Live-in is 24-hour with contracted sleep hours (typically 8 hrs of sleep). Per-diem shifts are as-needed.

How do you pay?

Weekly direct deposit. Overtime at time-and-a-half. Overnight differential for awake-overnight shifts. Holiday premium. We are W-2 employees — not 1099 contractors — so we handle taxes, Workers’ Comp, and unemployment insurance.

Can I work as a live-in caregiver?

Yes. Live-in caregivers have a separate bedroom in the client’s home and contracted sleep hours. We match live-in candidates carefully — the arrangement works best when the caregiver and family are a genuine long-term fit.
